Homo heidelbergensis was an early human. It was almost human, but lacked one thing – imagination. They couldn’t think “what if?”.
Homo heidelbergensis means “man from Heidelberg”. Heidelberg is a town in Germany. They lived during the Anglian ice age around 380,000 years ago.
Homo heidelbergensis had a very wide nose that it stretched almost across the entire face. It had the widest nose of all ancient humans.
After heidelbergensis went extinct, the evolutionary line split into two: one starting with the famous and tough Homo neanderthalensis and the other starting with the imaginative Homo sapiens idaltu, which was the modern man’s African version.
Another species called Homo rhodesiensis was found near the town of Rhodesia in South Africa. Scientists believe that Homo rhodesiensis and Homo heidelbergensis are the same species.
