Danger in the Desert

Author: Roger Cohen
Publisher: Sterling Point Books
Type/Genre/Subjects: Biography, Action, History, Adventure, Science, Paleontology, Archaeology
Plot Summary:

Paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews explores the Gobi Desert and discovers many dinosaurs familiar today, such as OviraptorProtoceratops, and Velociraptor. Andrews was raised in Beloit, Wisconsin, and worked as an authority on cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) for some time in the American Museum of Natural History . Afterwards, he led many expeditions to Central Asia to support a theory of Henry Fairfield Osborn, the president of the museum, that mammals and humans originated in Central Asia. Although he did find many mammal fossils, he was never successful in proving the theory right. He is now known for discovering many of the well-known Mongolian dinosaurs, being the first scientist to explore the Flaming Cliffs, and finding the first dinosaur nests and embryos. The book also tells of the daring exploits of the paleontologist, such as fighting off bandits, and smashing vipers under the crew’s tent.
