Incident at Petrich

In 1925, there was a crisis between Greece and Bulgaria during which it seemed for two days that Greece would go to war against Bulgaria. Why? There are two different versions. The more famous version is where a Greek officer chased after his pet dog and inadvertently crossed the Bulgarian border, where he was instantly shot and killed. This gave the incident, The other version is that a few Bulgarian soldiers attacked a Greek outpost and killed the captain and a sentry there.

Needless to say, this escalated already existing tensions between Greece and Bulgaria, where former issued a 2 day ultimatum: Punish those responsible, make an official apology, and 20 million French francs as compensation to the families of the deceased. Greece sent soldiers afterward into the town of Petrich to enforce the demand. Bulgaria and Greece started fighting, and the latter appealed to the League of Nations to help. The League of Nations ordered a ceasefire and for Greece to remove their troops and pay 45,000 pounds to Bulgaria, while Bulgaria had to compensate the victims’ families. Nearly 50 Bulgarian civilians had been killed in the conflict before Greece agreed to the terms.
